The research access crisis

Here’s the thing: social media companies have been systematically shutting down the very research that could hold them accountable. Over the past five years, we’ve seen platforms like Twitter (now X) get sold, content moderation standards shift dramatically, and algorithms become more opaque than ever. Meanwhile, companies have been limiting API access and making collaborations one-off events rather than sustained partnerships. Diverging results from previous studies

This study found that manipulating polarizing content actually did affect political attitudes, which contradicts the Meta-academic collaboration during the 2020 elections that found largely null effects. Why the difference? Well, Piccardi’s team specifically targeted individual posts expressing animosity, while the Meta study intervened at the user level or changed overall feed ranking. Plus, let’s be real – X under Elon Musk is a very different beast from Facebook during stricter moderation eras. The platform context matters, and that’s exactly why we need more independent research methods like this one.
