Microsoft Releases Enterprise Cloud Backup Tool for Windows Migration

Microsoft‘s New Backup Solution for Business Users

Microsoft has officially launched its enterprise cloud backup tool, making it generally available to business customers who need assistance with migration processes. This announcement comes after the tool’s successful public preview period earlier this year.

Key Features and Availability

First showcased at Microsoft Ignite 2024 and entering public preview in May 2025, Windows Backup for Organizations is designed to streamline backup procedures and facilitate smoother transitions to new devices. The tool specifically preserves Windows settings, user preferences, and generates comprehensive lists of Microsoft Store-installed applications.

The feature operates as an opt-in service, disabled by default, and becomes accessible after installing the September 2025 Windows Monthly Cumulative Update on Microsoft Entra joined devices. When restoring data to a new device, the backup seamlessly transfers all saved configurations and application information.

Strategic Timing for Windows 10 Migration

The release timing is particularly significant, arriving just as Windows 10 approaches its end-of-life deadline. With only days remaining before the operating system loses official support, businesses face critical decisions about extending security updates or upgrading to Windows 11. This backup tool provides crucial support during this transition period.

Storage and Compatibility Details

Microsoft has confirmed that encrypted backups are stored in Exchange Online cloud infrastructure within the tenant’s chosen country or region. While backups can be created on Windows 10 22H2 devices alongside Windows 11 versions 22H2, 23H2, and 24H2, restoration is only possible to the three Windows 11 versions. This compatibility structure clearly encourages migration away from Windows 10.

The restoration process maintains the standard Out of the Box Experience while reinstating all settings preserved during backup. As reported by our colleagues at imdmonitor.com, this initiative represents Microsoft’s broader strategy to ensure business continuity and connectivity across organizational environments.

Complementary Cloud Solutions

This backup tool forms part of Microsoft’s comprehensive approach to enterprise support. Another recent innovation includes Windows 365 Reserve, launched this summer, which provides employees with 10 days of Cloud PC access, further enhancing organizational flexibility and disaster recovery capabilities.

Together, these solutions demonstrate Microsoft’s commitment to providing robust, cloud-based tools that address critical business needs during significant technological transitions.
